350 Viet Cong fighters defeated a large force of American-equipped South Vietnamese troops but failed in attempt to get the radio transmitter. Three American helicopter crew members are killed. Then there was a Buddhists riot break up in South Vietnam for restraining their rights to display religious flag. The demonstration spread even wider as the crackdown evoked public outrage. Henry Cabot Lodge was assigned as U.S. ambassador in South Vietnam. The new ambassador began to plan a coup against Diem. With the secret help from rebel generals Duong Van "Big" Minh, the coup went on well in presidential palace but Diem and Nhu succeed to escape. The next day, after betrayed by one of their aides, Diem and Nhu surrendered inside a Catholic church. They were assassinated inside an armored car when taken back to Saigon. President John F. Kennedy is assassinated in Dallas. Lyndon B. Johnson succeeded as the 36th U.S. President.
