Melissa's New Thesis Statement
According to Susan Sontag in Regarding the pain of others, "American prefer to picture that evil was there and from which the United States - a unique nation, one without any certifiably wicked leaders throughout its entire history - is exempt." The Americans like to believe that this country is better and could not have problems thus finding someone else or reason than the actual reason to blame for any tragic event. For example, the Virginia Tech shooting. After the shooter was identified as Cho Seung-Hui, Cho's family migrated from South Korea when he was 8 years old, the New York Times and The New York Post, kept referring to him as Cho, the South Korean as if the fact that he was South Korean influenced what he had done or changed what happen.
