Raya Alperin - ENG 110 - In-Class Writing #1

The first story that comes to mind is something that happened in Queens about three months ago. A thirty-four-year-old Orthodontist was killed as his four-year-old daughter watched in shooting him to death. He had won custody of the little girl a week earlier after a long, bitter divorce battle and his ex-wife and her family threatened him and his parents. She said, “I'm going to kill your son, and your whole family will be in the cemetery.”

Later on doctor’s ex-wife and her sisters met with State Senator. On that meeting one of the sisters asked “What if something happened to the father of a child?” “What will happen if he would be able to take care of his daughter or the child will disappear?”
A couple of days later after the shooting police had arrested a suspect in murder of orthodontist. A homemade silencer was left at the crime scene and police were able to lift fingerprints off of it. The suspect was a relative of his ex-wife. The mother of the girl had been trying to have the child placed in her custody after the father was shot to death. At first, the child was placed in the custody of her father’s relatives, but after that the Family Court decided that the Administration for Children’s Services could take a care of the child for a three to six months or even longer if it would be necessary.

It was a big tragedy for the orthodontist’s family, relatives and his patients. The family of the dental doctor lost his sister because of leukemia a year ago and now the lost the son, who was shot in front of his daughter at the playground in Forest Hills. This shooting could affect not only on the dentist’s daughter but also on other children who were playing there and cause them a series mental problems. Doctor’s relatives said, “He was a top-notch orthodontist - when he saw a poor family could not manage its finances, he would give it to them for half price or sometimes for free.” Even his patients when they came to my office they were crying and describe him as a truly honest doctor.

The reason why it sticks out in my mind is because this is unusual crime story that cannot leave you with indifference. It’s not happened every day and it’s not an accident. The doctor was shot in front of his so young daughter and the mother of this child is suspected in ordering this murder. It wasn't just a death it was a murder, the murder of a father in front of his daughter.

When you asked us to write an essay about a story that first will come to our mind I did not hesitate and choose a story about shooting an orthodontist in Queens a few months ago. This tragedy really touches my heart. How heartless some one can be to kill a person in front of his child and all other children?! How heartless someone can be to order or to organize such as murder. Since this case is not close yet and officially the killer is not in prison, so time to time I hear people still talking about this horror and time to time you can see a news about the legal process and it’s refreshing my memory (see the following link the latest news: http://www.ny1.com/ny1/content/index.jsp?&aid=77596&search_result=1&stid=10)
