These days people are more into internet use and community-based and social networking sites like Orkut, MySpace and Facebook, to make new and unknown friends from all over the world. There are lots of "cyber crimes" happening because of these social network services. Many of them misuse it and do wrong things out of it. Some months back, there was a hot topic in media and in all kind of news in India, that a boy named Adnan was kidnapped and killed through Orkut.
Adnan was a resident of India and was addicted to Orkut.com for social networking and making new friends. He did friendship with a local girl, but the girl's profile was fake and someone used a girl name and made an account in orkut. According to the media, Adnan and that girl had lot of chatting on orkut and also that the girl was repeatedly insisting him to meet, but on asking her photograph, she always refused by saying that she is beautiful. Though after much request, Adnan got ready to meet her and that meeting caused his death. He was kidnapped by his two-three friends from orkut itself and asked some money to Adnan's family. But when Adnan's family reported to police about their son's kidnapping, Adnan's friends killed him.
I read this news online from an Indian news site and confirmed this by seeing it on T.V. also in some Indian news channel. After hearing this news, I was shocked and got really disturbed for many days, as I was also using these social networks especially orkut. I was thinking about Adnan and his family and was worried about myself and then after this incident I stopped using orkut as it was not safe and secure. This story came into my mind first because it moved me for so many days and also because of that I stopped using community-based sites especially like Orkut. This was really very sad but one should always know all the do's and don's of social-networking sites before involving in it or before making an account in it. And I learned a lesson that we should not do friendship with unknown people at least not online as we don't know who is it and who is talking to us?
Thus, these cyber-crimes happen all around the world, but we just avoid it and continue our life with same thing. And nowadays, youngsters are more and more into these kind of internet stuffs. Hope this incident may help all of us to be very careful, not only with internet and social networking sites, but also with everything in our life.
This above incident can be read in more details in the below given link:

After re-reading the original article, I think I remembered the story well with the name of a boy, but I forgot the name of the girl, by whose name the fake profile was made on Orkut. I also missed some of the minute details such as he was missing from Saturday night and then he also talked to his family before being killed by his friends, etc.. I think this sad story of Adnan touched my heart so much that I was able to remember this story and was able to narrate it after a long time.

I was not aware of this article but after reading your post it made me think about a few articles similar to this about other online networks such as hi5 and myspace. I its really scary because like the boy in this article, yourself and alot of other people I know, I also use a few of those networks. We need to be more aware if we are going to continue to use such networks.
